After much debate and searching on the internet we decided to look for a Border terrier as Freds, we firmly believed was part border and the breed seems to be sturdy with few of the inherited genetic defects which beset pedigree dogs. A few phone calls to a local breeder identified a 6 month old Border Terrier in Okhampton some 40 miles from home. We drove to the farm to see Timmy, a bouncing, friendly little dog and agreed to have him in a week's time as we still had not received Freddy's ashes. Our son, Rich, agreed to collect the ashes and visit us for the weekend. Another sad time with lots of tears but it is getting better with Timmy helping us. Freddy's ashes are in a wooden casket with photos alongside on a chest of drawers in our bedroom. Scattering his ashes doesn't seem appropriate. This way we can still talk to him and have something of him left together with happy memories.
On January 28th 2008 (my 66th birthday) Timmy came home. He was very nervous, creeping around with his tail down. After a few days the real Timmy started to show- a vivacious, affectionate pup! We try not to do the same things as we did with Freddy but they are all creeping back. At first it hurts but time is such a great healer. Occasionally we even call him Freddy, I suppose out of habit.
