I'm Making a Start

This year I'm starting writing a record of our activities. I'm hoping to keep it up to date with the best of intentions! I'm not a good writer, the grammar will not be perfect and I don't use big words, I'm just an ordinary guy. Spelling (to UK readers) may be a little odd as this laptop has an US dictionary and auto corrects, even when I don't require it! I'm writing this for world wide readers so apologies to UK readers who will know the local geography.

I'm starting with our trip to Cornwall in the motorhome over Christmas 2007. Our dog Freddy was very unwell with failing kidneys diagnosed. Our intention was to return to our vet, as suggested, after Christmas to have an ultrasound scan to identify the underlying problem. The vet suggested we go ahead with the trip as it would make no difference to Freddy's health. He was not a happy dog with frequent bouts of sickness but still enjoyed short walks. His passion always was running on a beach, fetching stones from shallow water and chasing pieces of seaweed which I threw. There wasn't much running or chasing seaweed which dismayed me- he just seemed very sad (in retrospect he must have been in great pain).

The Caravan Club site at Looe was as usual a good standard with hard standings for everyone- a necessity at that time of year to avoid getting bogged down in muddy grass. We parked in an area where we thought would be sheltered from the prevailing winds and close to the doggy walk area. Looe is a small fishing town split in half by the estuary. The town consisted of the usual mix of gift shops, a small supermarket and cafe's selling the famous (or is it infamous) Cornish pasty! Most of the shops were open which was a surprise but I suppose they try to make the most of the Christmas trade. The local beach had a total all year ban on dogs unless you walked a considerable distance, scrambling over rocks, to gain access to the remote end.
The site warden and his wife organized a drinks and nibbles evening which I attended alone as Di had a heavy cold and we felt that we couldn't leave Freddy alone. I had a long chat with our neighbour who was a full timer having sold his house and hit the road with his dog and a small trailer holding all his belongings! I don't think I could do that as I do like some space around me and a garage to do odd jobs.
Christmas presents were exchanged, I bought Di a Nintendo DS and 3 (adult not childish) games, Freddy had his usual new collar. We both silently thought it would be his last but said nothing.
