CONISTON

Yet another wet day, but we carried on undaunted to Coniston to see the steam gondola. Di looked at the cost of a trip and we decided it would be pointless as the visibility was so poor.

The original Gondola, which set sail in 1859, spent many years on the bottom of Coniston and although it was raised, the timbers were not strong enough to survive the rigours of restoration, so this is an identical copy. The replica Gondola shows how the Victorians had a taste for luxury and elegance!
