This was supposed to be the end of our stay in Threshfield, travelling west and south to a CL ( farm site) near Clitheroe about 25 miles away for a stay of 8 days. We arrived just before 12 noon to be greeted by chickens running all over the site (great with a Border Terrier!), no people in any of the buildings. The pitches, 8 of them, not 5 as the rules specify, were all sloping, made of reclaimed tarmac lumps and arranged for UK vans with doors on the nearside. Adjacent to the site was the usual discarded farm machinery plus stored caravans- very pretty. A cockerel was crowing incessantly in the run which adjoined the caravan field- I can just imagine Di's reaction to this at 5am dawn!. We tried to level on 3 of the pitches, failing miserably and concluded that this was not for us. We voted with our wheels having established that we could return to Threshfield for 2 days only as they were fully booked for the weekend.
Di managed to read the route instructions backwards and we arrived from whence we came at 2.30pm in sweltering heat and starving not having had lunch. Our original pitch was taken but we managed to get one just 2 pitches away, a good sunny spot.
The next problem was where to stay for the following 6 days. A quick search on the Internet showed we could bring forward our next stay at Grin Low near Buxton by 4 days leaving just 2 days, this weekend, to be found. Di had a flash of genius remembering there is a commercial site near us. A quick lunch 3pm and off in the car to investigate. Yes they had vacancies and a reasonably flat pitch on grass but not a problem at the moment as the ground is baked as hard as concrete.
We spent the rest of the day keeping cool under the awning and eventually went indoors at 10pm. Our experience of CL's has not been good, this is the second one we have left, so in future we have decided to view before committing ourselves. In this case the web site looked so good, the photos must have been taken by an estate agent! See http://www.acrehill.com/
