Today we visited Grosmont where the Whitby and Pickering railway line passes. Grosmont is located within the Esk Valley about 5 miles from Whitby, off the A169. Grosmont was originally named Grandimont, taking its name from a small priory founded about 1200 which once stood by the north bank of the Esk.
Looking at Grosmont today, it is hard to believe it was once the site of a thriving ironstone industry, evidence of which can still be seen in the heavily wooded National Park car park. This was another of our 'lucky' days when we were in the right place at the right time. On this occasion it was to see the Sir Nigel Gresley steam loco. I'm taking photos of the platform and signals and Di's shouting 'look behind you'!
Little did we realize it was a famous steam loco until it came into view.
